Fable

At the park, Evan was showing off — jumping, running, and texting at the same time.

He wasn't paying attention and dropped his phone into a narrow storm drain.

Panicked, he spotted Zoe, who had long, slender arms.

"If you can get it, I'll give you five dollars!" Evan promised.

Zoe hesitated.

Evan was always making promises he didn’t keep.

But five dollars sounded good, so she squeezed her arm down the drain.

She scraped her elbow and ripped the sleeve of her shirt,

but finally pulled out the muddy phone.

Evan grabbed it back and frowned.

"You scratched the screen!" he said. "I'm not paying for that."

Zoe looked at her torn sleeve, wiped the dirt off her arm, and walked away — five dollars poorer and one shirt wiser.
